Drowning is a leading cause of death for children in the United States. Prevention is the key to saving lives. As a partner of the American Red Cross, McDowell Wellness Center believes that teaching water safety education, coordinated with elementary schools and other youth programs, helps reduce drowning incidents among children ages 5 through 12.

To assist with our SAFE SWIM program, we follow guidance from the American Red Cross‘ Longfellow’s WHALE Tales. This engaging program helps Water Safety Instructors and youth leaders teach children about safe behavior in, on and around the water. At McDowell Wellness Center we incorporate lessons from Longfellow’s WHALE Tales K–6 Educational Packet for second graders across Boyle County and Danville school districts. These lessons are designed to give children an awareness of how to be safe around and in the water. We include information about pool safety, drowning prevention, emergency assistance, Kentucky laws regarding lifejackets and boating, along with other activities that promote safe aquatic recreation.
We encourage teachers and parents to participate to also learn about drowning prevention, water safety, and fun family aquatic experiences!
